About Fortress Crypt

Fortress Crypt is maintained by Steve Watts, through The Lion’s Kingdom IT Solutions, LLC. It started from a straightforward question: what does it look like to take cascade encryption — the same principle behind tools like VeraCrypt — and build it as a modern, cross-platform, post-quantum-ready file format, in the open, with the project’s own mistakes published alongside its features?

Philosophy

Don’t invent new cryptography. Cascade the best-vetted cryptography that already exists, document exactly what it does and doesn’t defend against, and treat every audit finding — including the critical ones — as something to publish, not bury. That last part isn’t a slogan: the Security & Transparency page documents two critical findings from the project’s own independent audit pass, in full, including the one that has no complete fix and says so.

Roadmap

  • Now: Python/CLI, iOS, and Android implementations sharing one interoperable .fortress format, licensed AGPL-3.0, with the source public at code.fortresscrypt.com and open to outside contributors under the Contributor License Agreement described on the Get Involved page.
  • Next: Pursue a formal, independent third-party cryptographic audit — not just the project’s own adversarial review — and publish those results with the same transparency as everything else.
  • Later: Introduce a commercial licensing option for organizations that need to embed Fortress Crypt without AGPL’s copyleft obligations. This does not remove or restrict the free AGPL-3.0 path, which continues indefinitely.
